How to Flush an A/C System After Compressor Burnout

Air conditioner systems sometimes suffer from burnout due to over-use. This burnout leaves build up and residue in the vents and pipes of the air conditioner, causing the system to malfunction. Flushing an air conditioner system removes these problems. Before attempting flushing, have your air conditioner repaired by a trained professional. A faulty compressor may lead to serious air conditioning problems, making flushing a pointless exercise.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cover of the air conditioner. Loosen the screws holding the cover in place using a screwdriver. Lift the cover and set it aside. Wipe the dust from the air conditioner using a clean towel.

    • 2

Disconnect the compressor cable by pulling it gently from the air conditioner. Disconnect any other tubing such as dryer, accumulator and expansion tubes. The tubes in your air conditioner will vary depending on make and model.

    • 3

Connect flexible tubing to the openings left by removing the compressor tubing.

    • 4

Measure the flusher fluid. Use about 1 gallon per ton of air conditioner system capacity. Pour the flusher fluid into a large bucket.

    • 5

Connect one end of a section of flexible tubing to the intake opening of a circulation pump. Connect the other end of this tubing to the bucket of flusher fluid. Connect a separate section of tubing to the outlet side of the circulation pump. Connect the other end of this tubing to the evaporator coil of the air conditioner.

    • 6

Turn on the circulation pump. Allow the fluid to flush for about 30 minutes. Turn off the pump and disconnect the tubing from the pump.

    • 7

Clean the tubing and air conditioner parts using warm, soapy water. Air-dry the parts and put them back in the air conditioner.
