How to Cover Foundation Vents

Foundation vents are small, rectangular vents placed in the foundations of houses to help prevent moisture from forming under the structure. These vents are typically installed at regular intervals around the entire foundation and allow air to ventilate under the house. While there is some controversy as to whether these vents are useful or harmful, most heating and cooling specialists will agree at least that foundation vents should be covered in the winter to keep the cold air out.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a small roll of R-19 insulation to make covers for the foundation vents. This type of insulation is efficient enough to keep the air out, but also thin enough to fit into the recessed part of where the vent is installed into the foundation.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the foundation vent from outside the house. Place the tape measure on the foundation hole of the vent, rather than the vent itself. The insulation will actually need to be slightly larger than the vent to provide a snug fit.

    • 3

Don a long-sleeve shirt, pants and gloves before you work with the insulation. Wear protective goggles and dust mask to keep airborne insulation particles from causing irritation to the eyes and throat.

    • 4

Unroll the insulation with the paper side facing up. Hold the insulation down. Use a utility knife to cut the insulation to the size you need for each vent.

    • 5

Push a cut piece of insulation into the recessed part of a foundation vent with the paper side resting against the vent. Continue around the house, covering each vent in a similar manner.
