How to Clean HVAC Duct Socks

HVAC duct socks, also known as fabric or textile ducts, are designed to be removed, cleaned and reinstalled multiple times. HVAC is a common acronym used to refer to products used for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Porous fabric duct socks filter and disperse forced air instead of simply acting as a conduit like their rigid metal counterparts. Clean HVAC duct socks are able to work more efficiently than those clogged with dust and debris.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the straps or unzip end connections holding the HVAC duct in place. Separate long sections of fabric ducting for easier transport and cleaning. Turn the material inside out to expose the dust covered surfaces.

    • 2

Load sections of textile duct into a large capacity washing machine until it is half full. Add the manufacturer's recommended amount of laundry detergent. Run the washing machine on a standard cold wash cycle.

    • 3

Move the cleaned HVAC duct sock to the dryer. Set the dryer for a low heat cycle. Remove the duct sock from the dryer while it still is slightly damp.

    • 4

Lay the ducting material out flat on a clean surface. Reconnect the duct sock sections once they have completely dried.
