How to Dehumidify a House

Excess humidity inside your home can lead to cold-like symptoms, respiratory problems, congestion, sore throat and even asthma attacks. Geographic location largely determines the amount of humidity inside a home, which can fluctuate with the season. Humidity can cause mold to grow and can harbor bacteria, viruses and other pollutants. According to Kenneth Hellevang with the North Dakota State University Extension office, optimal indoor humidity levels range from 30 to 50 percent.

Instructions

    • 1

Ventilate your home by opening windows and doors when outside temperatures drop below 70 degrees but remain warm enough for comfort. Run an attic fan if you have one to help draw drier outside air into the home.

    • 2

Use an air conditioner when the temperature rises above 70 degrees.

    • 3

Decrease the amount of time you spend int the shower or bath. Run the overhead fan in your bathroom while you bathe and shower to exhaust the moisture outside the home.

    • 4

Vent your dryer so that the hot air goes outside. Wash only full loads of clothes and hang your clothes outside to dry whenever possible.

    • 5

Place dehumidifiers throughout your home. Allow them to run 24 hours a day if the humidity is high. Empty the trays at least twice a day. This will give you a good idea of the amount of moisture in your home.
