Directions for a Ceiling Fan

If the thought of spending hundreds on air conditioning during the summer makes you cringe, a ceiling fan is a suitable alternative to maintaining your home's temperature without denting your savings. Ceiling fans redistribute air through your home to provide air circulation during the summer, and also push air down during the winter to keep keep you warm, according to Energy Star. While ceiling fans come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they all function the same way by rotating their blades clockwise or counter clockwise to circulate air.

      Pull the metal cord hanging from the ceiling fan to turn on the fan. A clicking noise will signify it is turned on. The first pull of the string sets the fan's speed to the fastest setting.

      Pull the cord once or twice more after the initial pull to change the setting to medium or low. A third pull turns off the ceiling fan. Depending on the model of the ceiling fan, there may be two cords hanging from the fan. One string is for the lighting, which is usually shorter than the power string.

      Push the switch located above the ceiling fan's blade to switch the blade direction from clockwise to counter clockwise. The clockwise direction pulls air up, while the counter clockwise direction pushes air down.

      Place a dust sheet underneath the ceiling fan, and remove dust from the fan's blades with a vacuum cleaner when the fan is off. The vacuum cleaner's brush attachment is suitable for reaching and wiping down the blades.
