Roof Ventilation Installation

Roof ventilation is an important component of the modern building envelope. It allows fresh air to cycle through the attic space and remove moisture. Without proper ventilation, moisture would build up in this space and promote the growth of mold. The correct amount of venting is a ratio of 1-to-300 of the total attic space. If the roof slope is less than one in six, the venting area should be 1-to-150. The installation of roof ventilation can be performed with common tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the proper place to install a roof vent from inside your attic; it should be close to the top of the roof line and between rafters. Drive a nail from the inside of the attic through the sheathing to provide a visual indicator of this location on the roof surface.

    • 2

Measure the size of the vent opening. Add 1/2-inch to the dimension and outline the vent opening on the shingle surface with chalk. The opening should be centered on the nail you drove through the sheathing.

    • 3

Cut along this line with the utility knife to remove the shingles.

    • 4

Drill a 1/2-inch starter hole near the inside edge of the cut-out shingles.

    • 5

Cut out the sheathing along the square with a jigsaw, using the starter hole to start your cut.

    • 6

Slip the pry bar under the bottom of the top shingle in the cut out and pry the self-sealing adhesive apart.

    • 7

Slide the top of the vent under the shingle and into place

    • 8

Drive four roofing nails along the bottom edge of the roofing vent to secure it in place.

    • 9

Apply roofing cement where the top of the vent meets the shingle, under the bottom of the top shingle along the vent and on top of the roofing nails securing the vent. This will provide a barrier to water penetration.
