How to Minimize Ductwork Air Flow

Well designed duct systems are essential in conserving energy and preventing leaks in the home. A good duct system will also ensure that every room in your house maintains a comfortable temperature. If you find vast differences in the temperature in some rooms or leaks occurring in your home, it may be due to a poor air duct system. However, you can correct the issue as well as reduce your utility bill by minimizing the ductwork air flow.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an HVAC professional contractor and schedule an appointment for them to come to your home. The contractor will check your duct system for improper sealing. If your home's duct system is improperly sealed, you can be at risk for carbon monoxide and other harmful fumes and the ductwork will have to be sealed with mastic and mesh tape for safety.

    • 2

Ensure that the joint area of the duct system is clean. Wipe it off with a clean cloth to remove any dust or debris so that it will be possible to properly seal the area with mastic.

    • 3

Apply UL181-rated mastic, a gummy water-based substance, to the surface of the duct system. Coat the duct with a generous amount of the mastic, using a brush, trowel, caulking gun, or your hand covered by a rubber glove. If the latter method is used, be sure the gloves are made of a heavy rubber material so that they won't tear while the work is being done.

    • 4

Work the mastic thoroughly in the joint and inside any cracks and crevices. Press lightly to evenly coat it. There should be at least a 1/2-inch overlap around any cracks or holes in the duct.

    • 5

Place mesh tape over the areas coated with the mastic that contain gaps of 1/4 inch or more. This is to ensure that the area is adequately sealed.
