How to Get Rid of a Burning Smell

The smell of something burning is rarely pleasant. If you've burned some food or singed an item of clothing, the smell can hang around for days if you don't take action to eradicate it. It may well diminish the longer you stay in the room, but it will hit visitors just as hard as it did you when the burning took place if you don't take steps to neutralize the aroma.

Instructions

    • 1

Extinguish whatever has been burning and allow it to cool before handling. Throw the item you've burned in a plastic garbage bag and place it in a garbage can outside your house. Don't put it in the trashcan in your kitchen as this will only contribute to the smell hanging around for longer.

    • 2

Soak any pots, pans or other items that have burned-on remnants in warm water and plenty of bleach. If the remnants are particularly stubborn, you'll need to use a scouring pad to remove them after they've soaked for a couple of hours. Wash away what you remove, putting larger bits in a plastic garbage bag to be placed in an outside garbage can.

    • 3

Open all the windows and doors in the house to allow the worst of the smell to escape. Make sure you open windows and doors in other rooms and any connecting doors in hallways to allow free movement of air around your home. Allow the house to ventilate for as long as possible.

    • 4

Take down any curtains or other material and wash on as high a heat as possible. If you have textile items that are dry clean only, give them a thorough going over with a vacuum cleaner.

    • 5

Close all of your windows once you've thoroughly ventilated your home and pour a quart of water and two cups of vinegar into a heavy pan. Place on the stove and boil for half an hour. Make sure all connecting doors in your property are left open to neutralize the smell in the rest of your house. If the odor is particularly bad, place small bowls of vinegar around your home and leave overnight.
