How to Care for a Home Fire

Home fireplaces are inexpensive ways to heat a home but proper care is essential to maintain the safety and effectiveness of the fires you burn in them. In addition to cleaning the area of the home fire, the U.S. Fire Administration also recommends taking other actions, such as using fire-resistant materials and monitoring the fire. Other fire care may involve how you arrange the firewood and getting a yearly inspection.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area around the fireplace. Remove any decorations or materials that may be flammable and keep open any air inlets or flues on wood stoves or fireplaces. This prevents restriction of the air supply to the fire source, as well as prevents deadly toxins from being unable to escape. Keep any glass doors open as well when burning a fire to allow adequate air supply.

    • 2

Install fire-resistant materials on wood stoves' walls. This lessens the danger of house fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

    • 3

Get an inspection. No matter which type of home fire source you have, whether it's a gas or wood-burning fireplace or a wood stove, a chimney specialist can ensure everything is in working order. Make sure the chimney specialist is certified. Getting yearly inspections will also maintain the fire source and allow it to have a longer lifespan.

    • 4

Burn firewood or materials only meant to be used in an inside home fire. Do not use cardboard, trash or other types of debris that can cause larger than expected flames or can produce toxic fumes.

    • 5

Place the logs at the back of the fireplace in a wood-burning unit. Make sure they are secure and will not fall out of the fireplace. Place them in a pattern that is criss crossed. Never leave it unattended.

    • 6

Remove any ashes that have accumulated in cast iron fireplaces, either by sweeping them out or by using a vacuum. Also, watch for any rust accumulations in the fireplace. Doing both of these steps will help ensure the fire burns efficiently and safely.
