How to Test for Radon in Tennessee

Radon is a radioactive gas that is emitted by the igneous and metamorphic rocks beneath the earth's surface. Radon causes up to 22,000 lung cancer-related deaths per year, and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. If you live in the state of Tennessee, there is a high probability that you have dangerous levels of radon in your home. You can conduct a test to determine the amount of radon present, and then decide what actions are necessary to keep your family safe from this odorless cancer causing gas.

  Contact the Tennessee Office of Environmental Assistance at 800-232-1139 and ask for a radon testing kit. They provide the kits free of charge to all Tennessee residents.

  Close the windows of your home for at least 12 hours before starting the radon test. Position the radon kit in the lowest level of your home, making sure that all doors and windows remain closed during the test. The radon kit should be at least 20 inches from the floor, and should not be near any exterior walls or windows. Refer to the testing kit instructions for the amount to time the kit will need to produce an accurate reading.

  Seal the kit in the plastic bag that was included with it and send it to the testing laboratory. The laboratory address should be pre-printed on the testing kit.

  Wait for the test results to be mailed to you. This will usually take two to three weeks.

  Consult with the Tennessee Office of Environmental Assistance if high levels of radon are present in your home. They can discuss the options available to reduce those levels so your family is not at risk for the health issues caused by radon exposure.
