How to Wire a 120V Fan

120-volt fans are typically used in bathrooms to provide mechanical ventilation. This ventilation is required by the building code in most municipalities. The fans remove moist and stale air from the bathroom environment. This is specially important during and after a shower when the water content of the air will encourage mold or mildew to grow. Wiring a 120-volt fan is simple once you know what each of the wires do.

Things You'll Need

  • Non-contact voltage detector
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Twist-on wire connectors.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the wires you are working on at the house's distribution panel. Flip the breaker and confirm the power is off by touching a non-contact voltage detector to the insulative cover of the wires.

    • 2

Loosen the grounding screw off the ventilation fan's box with a screwdriver. Wrap the green or bare wire from the switch around this screw and tighten it down.

    • 3

Strip 3/8-inch of insulation off the white and black wires coming from the switch. Twist the fan's black wire with the switch's black wire with pliers and install a twist on wire connector on top.

    • 4

Twist the fan's white wire with the switch's white wire with pliers and install a twist on wire connector on top.
