How to Clean a Reptile Rug

While reptile rugs resemble AstroTurf in color and texture, they are made from an absorbent, soft material. They are ideal for substrate in home terrariums because they absorb urates and other reptile wastes for a healthier, cleaner environment. The rugs require frequent cleaning and doing so saves money because you don't have to replace them every time one gets dirty.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup bleach
  • 2 cups water
  • Plastic washtub

Instructions

    • 1

Add the bleach to the washtub. Add hot water to the bleach to dilute it.

    • 2

Place the soiled reptile rug facedown into the solution. Let it sit for three hours.

    • 3

Snap on rubber gloves to protect your hands. The bleach water is not only strong, but the dirty wastes it pulls from the rug will be floating freely in the solution. Stick your hands into the tub and agitate the rug by hand, swishing back and forth in the water briskly.

Dump out the water and run clean, hot water into the tub over the mat. Continue to agitate it with your hands to knock loose any foreign materials. Rinse the reptile rug for about five minutes.

Hang the reptile rug outdoors in direct sunlight. Leave it in the sun for four to six hours. The rug needs to be completely dry to prevent mildew.
