How to Add Freon to Home Cooling System

Freon is the name of the common refrigerant used in home and automotive air conditioning systems. It is cycled through the cooling system's condenser and evaporator through finned coils that remove the heat from outside. There is no need to regularly add freon to your home cooling system. In most cases, you will only need to pump freon in if there is a leak in the system. Therefore, the first step should be finding and fixing all leaks in your home cooling system.

Things You'll Need

  • Pressure gauge set
  • Freon (refrigerant) cylinder

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the home cooling system to stop the compressor.

    • 2

Attach the central hose (yellow) of the pressure gauge set to the refrigerant (freon) cylinder. There are three hoses from the pressure gauge set and they are color coded. Turn down the regulators on the plain gauge set and the cylinder of freon to equalize the pressure within the hose. Close back the regulators.

    • 3

Remove the cap of the liquid line service valve of the cooling system. Attach the plain (red) hose of the pressure gauge to the service valve. Turn open a little the regulator of the pressure gauge set.

    • 4

Open the regulator of the freon cylinder and close it when the higher pressure on the gauge set reads its recommended operating pressure.

    • 5

Turn on the home cooling system and check that the sub-cooling level is adequate. Repeat Step 4 until the desired level is reached.
