How Do I Install Vents to Aid the Air Flow?

Proper ventilation aids the movement of fresh air through the attic, keeping your house cool and the attic free of moisture. Ventilation systems are vital to the health of your home, because trapped moisture can quickly create the perfect environment for mold. A well-ventilated attic is cooler, reducing your air conditioning bills in the summer and preventing ice damning in the winter. Installing additional roof vents is a simple project that anyone can do.

Instructions

    • 1

Hammer a nail from the inside of the attic, through the roof sheathing, in the location you want to install a vent, ideally as close to the peak as possible.

    • 2

Lay the template supplied with the vent on the roof with the nail centered in the middle and the template squared to the roof line. Outline the template onto the shingles with chalk.

    • 3

Cut the shingles along the chalk line with a utility knife and remove to expose the sheathing.

    • 4

Drill a 1/2-inch starter hole through the sheathing close to the edge. Cut around the square outline with a jigsaw, using the hole as the starting point.

    • 5

Pry up the edges of the shingles within three inches of the holes, and remove any nails. Be careful not to damage the shingles.

    • 6

Slide the vent under the side shingles and into place over the hole. Hammer three nails through the lower edge to lock it in place.

    • 7

Place a dab of roofers cement onto the top of each nail. Resecure the side shingles using the cement under each shingle.
