NuTone 696N Replacement Installation

The NuTone 696N, a ducted ventilation fan, mounts in a room's ceiling or wall. The louver on the 696N uses springs to hold it against the drywall. Designed for small bathrooms up to 45 square feet, the NuTone 696N connects to a 3-inch wide, round metal exhaust duct and needs a 120-volt power supply. You will need access to the duct connection in the attic or wall space to replace this unit.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker for the room where the NuTone 696N is located.

    • 2

Pull the old 696N's louver away from the drywall to expose the louver's springs. Squeeze the springs together and pull the louver away from the fan.

    • 3

Pull the 696N fan motor's electrical plug from the unit's electrical receptacle.

    • 4

Insert a slotted screwdriver into the slot between the 696N's housing and motor plate. Pry the housing away from the motor plate with the screwdriver. Once the motor plate's locking tab releases, pull the motor plate out of the housing.

    • 5

Slide the wiring cover straight out of the 696N's housing. Unscrew the three wire nuts that hold the electrical supply wires to the wires connected to the 696N's electrical receptacle.

    • 6

Remove the three screws or nails holding the inside of the 696N's housing to the wall studs or ceiling truss with a screwdriver or claw hammer. Two screws or nails hold the housing's flat surface and one nail or screw secures the curved baffle.

    • 7

Access the NuTone 696N's duct connection and housing mounting tabs. If the fan mounts in the ceiling, access the housing from the attic. If the fan mounts in a wall, remove the drywall surrounding the fan.

    • 8

Pull the electrical supply wire out of the old 696N's housing.

    • 9

Slice the tape that holds the exhaust duct to the fan's duct connection with a utility knife. Metal-backed duct tape holds the duct against the duct connection.

    • 10

Remove the screws or nails that hold the two mounting tabs against the wall stud or ceiling truss.

    • 11

Remove the old NuTone 696N and set the new fan in its place.

    • 12

Attach the mounting tabs on the new NuTone 696N to the wall stud or ceiling truss with 1-inch drywall screws. Tighten the screws with a Phillips head screwdriver.

    • 13

Slip the exhaust duct onto the 696N's duct connection and seal the seam with metal-backed duct tape. Flatten the wrinkles and bubbles in the duct tape with a squeegee.

    • 14

Push the electrical supply wire into the 696N's electrical connection box through the opening provided on the housing.

    • 15

Run three 1-inch drywall screws through the screw holes located inside of the 696N's housing. The baffle has one screw hole, and the flat side has two screw holes. Tighten the screws with the Phillips head screwdriver.

    • 16

Twist the electrical supply wires to the 696N's electrical receptacle wires and cover them with a wire connector. Pair the black wires together, the white wires together and the uninsulated electrical supply wire with the receptacle's green wire. Slide the wire cover into place.

    • 17

Align the tabs on the motor plate and push the plate into the 696N's housing. The tabs should snap into place.

    • 18

Push the motor's plug into the unit's receptacle.

    • 19

Squeeze the louver's springs together and insert the ends of the springs into the slots on the side of the motor plate. Release the springs and push the louver against the drywall.
