How to Replace a Bathroom Wall Mount Fan

A near necessity in a bathroom is a vent fan, which removes unpleasant odors and excess moisture that can cause mold and mildew to grow. The fans are often installed in the ceiling, but in some cases they are installed in the wall. Like other appliances, the vent fan can wear out or break, requiring you to replace it. This is a fairly basic job, although you do need to exercise caution, as electricity is involved.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut the power off to the fan at the main electrical box. Turn off the light switch connected to the fan as an extra precaution.

    • 2

Take the grille off the fan.

    • 3

Unscrew the motor assembly from the fan housing.

    • 4

Remove the plate that covers the wiring inside the housing.

    • 5

Pull the wires carefully out of the box inside the fan housing and remove the plastic connector caps by untwisting them. Do not touch the bare wires.

    • 6

Flip on the light switch connected to the fan back. Check the wiring inside the fan housing with a voltage tester. If you get a reading, return to the main electrical box and turn off the correct circuit. Turn the light switch off after you have tested the wiring and found that it's not live.

    • 7

Detach the wires in the fan housing from the fan motor. Unscrew the part connecting the house wiring to the fan housing to free it.

    • 8

Unscrew the fan housing and take it out of the wall.

    • 9

Slide the housing for the new fan into the hole, and screw it to the wall.

    • 10

Install the new fan in the wall, following the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 11

Connect the wiring for the fan to the wiring from the house with the plastic connector caps. Connect the white wires to the white wires, black to black, and green to green.

    • 12

Tuck the wiring into the box inside the fan housing. Place the cover plate over it.

    • 13

Reinstall the grille over the fan.

    • 14

Restore power at the main electrical box.
