Rock Salt for Mildew Odor Control

A mildew odor in your home indicates that your home has a mildew infestation. You will usually smell mildew before you notice it forming. Mildew grows in locations that are warm, damp and poorly lit such as basements, crawl spaces and bathrooms. Rock salt helps to remove the moisture from the air in these locations, which prevents the mildew from forming. Local road departments often carry rock salt, but you can purchase it from home repair or automotive stores.
  1. Mildew

    • Mildew grows on many different surfaces and it can appear black, white or even green in color. When the air does not circulate well, the mildew will continue to form. Allowing the mildew to thrive will cause a musty and unpleasant odor to form. Preventing the mildew from developing will control the odor in a room or location. The moisture needs removed to stop the mildew from growing. Removing moisture from the air may seem challenging, but chemicals like rock salt can aid you in the process.

    Rock Salt

    • Rock salt, also known as anhydrous calcium chloride, works to absorb moisture from the air to kill mildew and the odors associated with it. Many highways and road departments use rock salt to melt snow. The white granules turn into liquid when they absorb moisture. Clemson University states that calcium chloride can hold twice its weight in moisture. Always follow the package instructions to ensure that you use it properly.

    Use Rock Salt

    • Cut the top off a cardboard milk carton. Rinse the carton out well and dry it with paper towels so that no moisture remains. Create small holes in the bottom of the carton with a needle. Around 15 to 20 holes will work fine to allow the liquid to drain. Place the container into an enameled pot and pour 1 lb. of calcium chloride into it. Sit the pot in a closet or a room and close the door shut. The calcium chloride will last anywhere from two weeks to two months depending on the humidity. Discard the liquid left in the pot and refill the container until you remove the excess moisture.

    Dangers

    • Use the appropriate container for the granules such as waxed cardboard or place them onto a screen over a nonabsorbent container so that the granules last awhile and remove the moisture properly. Keep calcium chloride away from fabrics and textiles because it can create holes. Wear gloves when using rock salt because it can irritate your skin. Store the calcium chloride away from children and pets on a shelf to prevent any accidents. Always add water to the liquid before you throw it away to dilute it.
