Chimney Kit Installation

If you use a fireplace on a regular basis you need to have a chimney liner to protect both you and your chimney. Without one, your chimney becomes a fire hazard and there is also the risk of buildups of deadly carbon monoxide. Replacement chimney liners can be bought in kit form that come complete with almost everything that you need to complete the task. It is not a job that you will be able to do on your own, so make sure that you have extra hands available to help.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Liner

    • 1

Remove the liner from the packet and straighten it out. You will need to do this outside in the yard or on the driveway because the liner must be straightened out completely.

    • 2

Attach the bottom termination connector and tighten the hose clamp to the connector. Take care not to over tighten.

    • 3

Measure from the bottom termination point to the chimney crown and add 1 foot. This will give you the total length of liner that you will need. Cut the liner to the required length using a pair of tin snips. Take care when doing this as cutting the liner will produce rough edges.

    Insulate the Liner

    • 4

Cut the insulation to the required length. The liner will need to be insulated all the way to the bottom of the connector. It will also need to overlap on itself by 1 inch, so to work out how much you will need, multiply the diameter of the liner and add 1 inch for the overlap. Cut away the excess.

    • 5

Lay the insulation out on the floor with the foil side facing you and lay the liner down the center of the insulation.

    • 6

Roll the insulation around the liner applying the adhesive that came with the kit along its length to keep it in place. When the whole of the liner has been covered, run the insulation tape that was provided along the seam.

    • 7

Roll the wire mesh around the insulated liner, including the bottom connector, and secure with the hose clamps.

    Install the Liner

    • 8

Climb onto the roof and drop one end of a long rope down the chimney.

    • 9

Have someone else tie the liner to the rope and center it in the chimney opening.

    • 10

Pull the liner up the chimney carefully. The liner is heavy, so make sure that you have enough manpower to complete this part of the task.

    • 11

Put a thick layer of caulk around the top of the chimney and put the chimney crown over the top of the liner and onto the caulk. Tighten the connect clamp around the top of the liner, which secures it into place.

    • 12

Attach the liner to the bottom connector.
