How to Mix Flexible Ducts with Metal

Air ducts form the pipeline through which air travels to adjust the temperature in the rooms throughout your home. Ducts come in many different shapes and sizes, and are constructed from a variety of materials; two common types are metal and flexible ducts. Flexible ducts are used to join two straight pieces of metal duct work together around corners; however, they can only be attached to round -- not square or rectangular -- metal ducts.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance between the two metal ducts. Cut a piece of flexible duct of the same length using aviation snips.

    • 2

Peel back the insulation about 4 inches from each end of the flexible duct; you want to just expose the metal duct inside.

    • 3

Insert a duct clamp onto each end of the metal duct.

    • 4

Insert the ends of the flexible duct into the metal ducts on either side.

    • 5

Tighten the duct clamp screws with a screwdriver. The clamp should tighten enough to secure the two ducts together.

    • 6

Pull the insulation over the clamps on both ends of the flexible duct.

    • 7

Wrap the overlapping edges of the ducts with duct tape.
