How to Close Off a Soffit Vent

An attic's ventilation system is vital to removing moisture before mold and mildew
damage the wood framing. This ventilation consists of lower soffit and upper roof vents to work properly. As the hot air rises in the attic space, fresh air is drawn in through the soffits. Closing off soffit vents is not always a wise idea because it reduces the airflow through the attic. If your specific situation calls for this task, it is as simple as plugging the holes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the flashlight and climb up in your attic space. Only walk along the top of the ceiling joists to avoid falling through the top floor ceiling and damaging your home. Bring with you a bag of loose fill insulation.

    • 2

Crawl to the location of the soffit you want to close off. If there is a soffit baffle attached to the roof sheathing, pull it off with your hands and set it aside.

    • 3

Pour loose fill insulation into the space from the edge of the wall system out to the fascia board. Use as much insulation as will fit into the space.
