How to Close off a Vent

If your house has a room that is not getting cooled down by the air conditioner, its likely because all the cold air is being released through other vents leaving little cold air to be distributed to the hot room. The hot room always has the last vent on the air duct system. This problem can be remedied by closing off unneeded vents so that more cool air is available for the hot room.

  Determine which vents are not needed throughout the house. Bathroom vents and cooler rooms with multiple vents are ideal to close off.

  Use a ruler to measure the vents to be closed off and cut the magnetic vent covers to a size that covers the entire vent.

  Place the magnetic vent covers over the vents. The closer the vent is to the AC unit, the greater the air pressure form the vent will be. It’s possible that the pressure will be too great for the magnetic hold and will blow the magnetic cover off the vent. In this case, use duct tape to secure the cover over the vent.
