How to Stop a Squeal in a Bathroom Vent Fan

A bathroom vent fan protects against a variety of potential bathroom issues, like odors, increased humidity levels, peeling wallpaper caused by moisture and also foggy bathroom mirrors after you bathe or shower. Different bathroom vent fans have different noise levels, but that noise should never be intrusive or annoying, which is what a squealing vent fan is. When you realize the vent fan is squealing, remedy the problem yourself. You likely don't need professional help to do it.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the wall switch controlling the bathroom vent fan to the off position. Position a stepladder underneath the vent fan, if it is located on the ceiling.

    • 2

Remove the fan cover. Unscrew and remove the screws holding the cover into place, using a screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the screw holding the fan into place, using a Phillips screwdriver. Depending on the particular design of your vent fan, there may be only one screw, or there may be more.

    • 4

Pull the fan out of the wall or ceiling recess. Wipe any dirt off the fan blades, using a rag. Dirt not only causes the fan to rattle because of imbalance, it also impedes the flow of air.

    • 5

Place a few drops of penetrating oil, such as WD-40 or 3-In-1, into the fan motor bearings. Rotate the fan blades around with your finger, to work the oil in.

    • 6

Reinstall the fan into the recess, putting any screws that anchor it into position, using a Phillips screwdriver. Position the cover over the vent fan, and reinstall the screws, using a screwdriver.

    • 7

Flip the wall switch controlling the bathroom vent fan to the "on" position, and make sure the squeal is gone.
