How to Insulate a Roof Vent

Modern homes use a ventilated attic design. This system maintains a constant flow of outdoor air throughout the attic space. The purpose of this ventilation is to remove built up moisture and to maintain a temperature close to the outside. Attic vents consist of top and bottom openings that allow the natural affect of hot air rising to pull air into the attic. The insulation for the top of the building can obstruct the bottom vents if not properly installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb up into the attic and make your way to where the bottom edge of the roof meets the exterior walls. Only step on top of the ceiling joists to avoid falling through the ceiling.

    • 2

Position the soffit vent baffle on the bottom of the roof sheathing so that it extends to the corner of the fascia on the leading edge of the roof line.

    • 3

Staple the baffle to the roof sheathing every six-inches. Make sure the baffle can't move from its location.

    • 4

Pour loose fill insulation around the vent baffle being sure not to clog the air passageway. Repeat this process to install a vent baffle between every third roof joist.
