How to Vent a Bathroom Fan on a Hip Roof

While hipped roofs make for a smooth roofline, they can cause a little difficulty while trying to vent a bathroom that is under the area where the hip meets the outside wall. Products for venting bathrooms are readily available, and the construction industry has made allowances for these types of roofs. There are several methods for installing bathroom vents on a hip roof. They range from going straight up through the roof, to using flex pipe to reroute the vent to another area of the roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the area on the bathroom ceiling where the fan is to be installed. Draw the hole necessary to accept the fan unit. Cut this hole with a keyhole saw. Remove any insulation that might be in the way.

    • 2

Look through the hole and determine the area of the roof that needs to be cut to accept the roof vent. Calculate the approximate center of the pipe where it will meet the roof, and make a mark.

    • 3

Drill a hole through the roof deck and the shingles. Go to the roof and remove the shingles around the area to receive the roof vent. Mark and cut a hole for the roof vent with the jigsaw.

    • 4

Install a short pipe extension (as needed) on the boot of the fan unit. Next, install the fan unit in the ceiling of the bathroom per the manufacturer's instructions. Be certain that the length of the pipe extension allows it to protrude slightly from the roofline.

Install the roof vent with roofing nails. Cut the shingles to fit around the vent and over the flange. Install the shingles. Use roofing tar where needed.
