How to Keep Bugs From Bathroom Vents

Bathroom vents are necessary for allowing hot humid air, such as is created by showering, to escape the bathroom, which in turn prevents mold and other unwanted conditions caused by an overabundance of moist air. Unfortunately, those same vents that circulate air can also allow insects access to your bathroom. Luckily, it is fairly easy to modify your fan so that air is allowed out while insects are kept out.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the outer cover of the bathroom vent. Some covers will simply snap on and off but others may require screws to be removed first. Reference the user's manual of the vent or examine the vent beforehand if you are unsure.

    • 2

Measure the vent openings on the frame of the vent. Some vents will be flat with just one opening while other vents may have a frame with multiple side and front openings.

    • 3

Cut a piece of mesh screening to cover each of the vent openings. Each piece of mesh screening should be just slightly larger than the vent opening it is covering.

    • 4

Lay a bead of silicone caulking around the edge of the vent opening and place the corresponding piece of mesh screening over the opening. Press the edges of the mesh screening into the caulk to secure it. Don't worry if your mesh screening is a little too big.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 for each of the vent openings. Allow the caulk to dry.

    • 6

Cut away excess mesh screening with a craft knife.

    • 7

Turn on the bathroom vent and ensure that the vent fan blades clear the mesh without any complications. If necessary, use the craft knife to remove the caulk and mesh and adjust the mesh so it does not interfere with the fan blades.

    • 8

Replace the outer cover of the vent.
