Fortunately, there are ways of cheaply draft-proofing your windows before you think about spending thousands of dollars on having them replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the frame that your windows fit into and the perimeter of your window frame where it meets your wall. You'll need to fit weather strip to the area where your windows close onto your frame, and apply a caulking compound around the edge of your window frame.

Buy the required amount of weather strip and caulking compound from your local hardware store. You can also order both of these items from a range of companies online.

    • 3

Remove your window from its frame if it's preventing you from applying weather strip. The method for doing so will depend on the type of windows you have installed.

    • 4

Peel away the protective layer from the weather strip and stick the adhesive side to the area of your frame that your windows meet when they close. Use a pair of scissors to cut the weather strip when you reach a corner. Make sure no gaps are left around the entire perimeter of your window frame.

    • 5

Refit your windows if you've removed them. Then close them. If you can feel air coming through your window, you may have left gaps in the weather strip you fitted.

Apply caulking compound to the area where your window frame meets your wall. Again, make sure you leave no gaps and the join between your wall and your window frame is completely sealed.
