What is the Cost to Line a Chimney?

Many chimneys do not have a chimney liner, or they have damaged liners that pose a fire hazard. Lining your chimney can cost a few hundred dollars or a couple of thousand dollars depending on factors that include the material you use, the size of your chimney and the purpose for your liner.
  1. General Information

    • A chimney liner provides a means to prevent heat transfers and seepage through the chimney's brick. If you have a fireplace, furnace or boiler, you may need to reline your chimney. Available chimney liner materials include clay tiles and cement casings. However, these options are typically more expensive to install. Stainless steel is a more commonly used liner material that you insert from the top of your chimney. The liner must be insulated to provide a greater degree of efficiency.

    General Costs

    • If you are relining your chimney because you have replaced your gas boiler or furnace, expect to pay between $300 and $700. If your boiler or furnace is oil operated, the cost will be higher at about $700 to $1,800. A stainless steel liner can cost between $20 and $40 a foot. If you don't know how many feet of liner you need, drop a tape measure down the chimney to determine the required length for your liner.

    Variables

    • The cost of your chimney liner can depend on a number of factors. Chimney liners are available in light, high performance light and heavy versions. The least expensive type is light while the most expensive is heavy, but you must ask an experienced mason to determine the appropriate liner for your chimney. If you do the project yourself you can save on labor and pay only for the materials. However, make sure you know what you are doing before you begin this job since a mistake can mean a potential fire.

    Energy Savings

    • Although you will pay a higher upfront cost, relining your chimney can provide you with energy savings. A better insulation can save between $200 and $300 a year off of your energy expense.
