How to Connect a Wood Stove to Air Ducts

A woodstove produces carbon monoxide through the chimney, so don't connect a stove pipe directly to your duct system. However, you can get the hot air moving around your house by using fans and your existing heating system fan to pull the air through your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Blower fan
  • Small circulating fans

Instructions

    • 1

Place your stove in a location in your home where you can optimize the rise of heat from the stove. A central location will enable you to move the heat more efficiently.

    • 2

Install a blower fan in your woodstove or place a circulating fan near it to help move the air to the duct system.

    • 3

Examine the insulation in your home. Homes that are air-tight and well-insulated rarely have trouble being heated by a woodstove.

    • 4

Open your heating ducts and cold air returns, and make sure they are clear and free of dust and debris. Clean them out as needed with a dust brush or vacuum.

    • 5

Turn on your heating or cooling system fan to help pull the air through the ducts. This will keep the warm air circulating through the house and even out the temperature.
