How to Add Vents to Boxed Eaves That Overhang the Roof

Proper attic ventilation keeps your attic cooler during the summer and prevents ice dams from forming on your roof in the winter. Vents installed on box eaves that overhang your roof are called soffit vents. If your attic doesn’t have proper ventilation to start with, adding soffit vents to the eaves can help. Plus, the vents can be installed even after your home is built with minimal work.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a cardboard template to use to trace the space for the vents. Cut the template out 1/2 inch smaller on all sides than the actual vent.

    • 2

Locate the eave’s rafters using the stud finder. Hold the template up to the spaces in between the rafters and mark them off with a marker.

    • 3

Drill starter holes in opposite sides of the marked-off vent and cut it out with the jigsaw.

    • 4

Place the vents over the holes, angled toward the house. Use the screwdriver to tighten the screws into all four sides of the vents and connect them to the eaves.
