How to Install Roof Vents on Steel Roofs

Metal roofing has some advantages over other roofing materials. It’s resistant to hail and wind damage, it’s lighter than clay and slate tiles, and some roofs have warranties that last up to 50 years. However, venting a metal roof has the same problems as with venting other types of roofing materials. Pipe vents are an effective way to get air out of your attic, but you must cut through the metal roof to install them.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb onto your roof to the area you want to install the vent. Use caution when walking on the roof.

    • 2

Cut a hole in the metal roof with the rotary saw, slightly larger than the vent pipe.

    • 3

Lower the vent pipe into your attic space.

    • 4

Fit the vent boot, the bottom of the vent that comes with the vent pipe set, over the top of the vent. Make sure it hangs over the sides of the hole you cut. Apply sealant on the underside of the vent boot and press it into the roof.

    • 5

Apply sealant around the top of the vent where it meets the vent boot.
