How to Fit Furnace Vents Together

Furnace vents allow hot air to travel throughout your home and warm it if you have a forced air heating system. However, you don’t just have one long furnace vent in your home; you have many vents that are connected together to create a network. If you need to attach two furnace vents together, it’s a simple process as long as the vents overlap each other by 2 to 3 inches.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your furnace so the vents won’t be hot while you connect them. The vents should be exposed in the area above your furnace. Slide a vent clamp over one end of the vent. Vent clamps are one standard size that is adjustable by tightening the screw on the side.

    • 2

Connect the pieces of vent together by pushing them into each other. One side of the vent should overlap the other side by 2 to 3 inches.

    • 3

Wrap vent tape around the vents where they connect to keep the air from leaking out. Add two to three layers of tape to the vents.

    • 4

Slide the vent clamp up around the tape. Tighten the clamp’s screw with a screwdriver to keep the clamp from moving.
