How to Replace Existing Roof Exhaust Vents With Solar Vents

Solar powered exhaust vents function the exact same way as normal exhaust vents, but they are powered by solar energy instead of your home’s electricity. To keep your attic ventilated properly, you need exhaust vents in your roof to expel the hot air in the summer and cold air in the winter. The solar powered vents can be installed in the same place as the old exhaust vents.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the ladder to climb up onto the roof. Use caution when working on any roof.

    • 2

Locate the exhaust vent you want to replace. Pry up the shingles around the old vent with the hammer claw. Put the drill in reverse to remove the screws from around the base of the vent. Lift the vent off the roof.

    • 3

Place the new solar powered vent over the old exhaust vent. Position the battery pack inside the vent so it will be protected from rain and snow. Use the drill to screw the new vent onto the roof.

    • 4

Position the solar panel on the west or south side of the roof, if possible. If not, position the panel so it is at a south or west-facing angle. Use the drill to screw the panel into the roof’s shingles.

    • 5

Arrange the shingles around the base of the solar roof vent. Hammer the shingles to the roof so they cover the metal base of the vent completely.
