How to Hang an Attic Vent

Attic ventilation is important because it keeps the air in your home moving freely. A well-ventilated attic keeps the temperature in your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and it prevents ice dams from forming on your roof in snowy weather. Ridge vents are one of the easiest and most effective types of attic ventilation to install. This type of vent is placed over the ridge of your roof in place of the shingles.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb onto the roof with the ladder. Remember to exercise caution when working on the roof at all times.

    • 2

Remove the shingles from the ridge of your roof. Remove all the shingles on either side of the ridge by about 6 inches. Use the hammer claw to remove the nails and pull up the shingles.

    • 3

Squeeze a line of caulk down either side of the ridgeline where you removed the shingles. Use the circular saw to cut out the roof sheathing on the inside of the caulk line and remove it from the roof.

    • 4

Place the ridge vent over the ridge, starting on one side of your roof. The vent comes in pieces about 2 to 3 feet long. Use the drill to screw the vent into the roof. Each subsequent vent will overlap the one before it by ½ to 1 inch. Screw the ends of the vents together with the drill.

    • 5

Squeeze out a line of caulk around the edge of the vent on both sides.
