How to Build a Rooftop Turban Vent

Turbine vents — which are turned by the wind — pull the air through a building's rooftop. They can move 347 cubic feet of air per minute with 5 mph wind and 1,342 cubic feet of air per minute with 15 mph wind. The turbine vents are installed like any other roof ventilation system, making it simple for the average homeowner to build.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb onto your roof with the ladder. Use caution on your roof to avoid falling off.

    • 2

Use a hammer to pry up the shingles in a 1-foot by 1-foot area around the place you want to install the turbine vent. Measure the circumference of the vent. Use the jigsaw to cut a hole into your roof about 1/2 inch larger than the bottom of the vent pipe.

    • 3

Slip the turbine vent pipe into the hole. The vent’s collar will cover the hole. Use the hammer to nail the turbine vent to the roof by the collar.

    • 4

Replace the shingles around the vent. Place the shingles all the way up to the turbine vent’s collar and nail them in place with the hammer.
