How to Extract Fan Grilles

A fan grille is a metal or plastic covering over a fan. All extractor fans -- those that pull air out of a room -- have fan grilles over them. Extractor fans, also called exhaust fans, often have filters inside of them that need cleaning every few months to keep the fan in working order. To access the filter, you have to extract the fan’s grille first.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a stepladder under the fan and climb the ladder to access the fan’s grille.

    • 2

Loosen the screws in the fan’s grille with the screwdriver. Remove the screws from all sides of the grille and extract the grille from the fan.

    • 3

Pull the fan’s filter out of the extractor fan. Wash the filter in warm water with two to three drops of dish soap to remove any built-up dirt or dust. Rinse the filter well with clean water. Shake the filter and allow it to dry completely before replacing it.

Fit the filter back into the fan. Place the fan grille over the filter and screw it back in place.
