How to Add Vents in a Basement

Basements with improper ventilation are breeding grounds for mold, mildew and large amounts of humidity. Proper basement ventilation will reduce or eliminate your basement’s chances of becoming an unhealthy environment. Basement ventilation is simple to install, since most basements already have window access to the outside of the house. Ventilation fans are all you need to provide new vents for your basement.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and length of the target windows to determine how large the vent fans should be. Install at least two of the fans in your basement for proper airflow.

    • 2

Open the basement window and remove the screen. Place the vent fan into the window and push it through the opening as far as it will go. Make sure the fan controls are on the inside of the basement.

    • 3

Drill holes into the side of the window, positioned next to the holes in the vent fan for the brackets. Place the brackets over the holes and use the drill to screw them into the wall. Screw the brackets to the vent fan. This will hold the vent fan in place in the window.

Plug in both vent fans. Turn one fan on to exhaust and one fan on to intake.
