How to Install Insulation Around an IC Recessed Light Fixture

Recessed light fixtures are available in two ratings: NIC-rated and IC-rated. NIC-rated fixtures must not have any contact with insulation and require flashing to keep insulation at least 3 inches from the fixture. These are frequently used in commercial buildings where energy efficiency is not a concern and the space above the ceiling is not insulated. IC-rated fixtures are more expensive and more commonly used in houses where energy conservation is paramount. Because IC-rated fixtures are designed to be used with insulation, no special precautions are necessary when insulating your attic.

Instructions

  1. Roll Insulation

    • 1

Place a roll of insulation in the cavity between two attic floor joists. Start at one end of the attic and unroll the insulation toward the other end. Stop when you reach a recessed light fixture.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of insulation from the roll with a utility knife. Push the pieces into the space between the fixture and the attic floor joists by hand so that the fixture is surrounded by insulation.

    • 3

Continue unrolling the insulation on the other side of the fixture.

    Blown Insulation

    • 4

Load the cellulose insulation into the blower, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Carry the hose of your insulation blower into the attic. Signal for your helper to turn on the blower.

    • 5

Hold the hose so that it blows cellulose about a foot in front of you as you walk through the attic.

    • 6

Blow cellulose into the cavities between the attic floor joists, including over and around the IC-rated fixtures, until the cellulose reaches the desired thickness. Have your help turn off the blower when done.
