How to Vent a NuTone Bathroom Fan

Removing noxious fumes and embarrassing odors is just part of the job performed by a NuTone bathroom fan. Warm, moist air from showers can cause mold and mildew problems – leading to unpleasant smells and costly repairs. You can install flexible ductwork to vent a NuTone bathroom fan outside of your house. When properly vented, the bathroom fan will help prevent moisture problems.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-inch flexible duct
  • Metal-foil tape
  • Drill
  • Drill bits
  • Ladder
  • 4 1/4-inch hole saw
  • Caulk

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a route for the flexible duct from the NuTone bathroom fan to an exterior wall. The route should be as short as possible and free from sharp turns. The easiest way to route the duct is through the attic. If you don’t have attic access, you’ll have to remove drywall or ceiling panels to run the duct.

    • 2

Slide the end of the flexible duct over the exhaust port on the side of the NuTone fan. Wrap a 12-inch strip of metal-foil tape around the duct and exhaust port to hold the duct in place.

    • 3

Run the duct to the exterior wall. Choose a location on the wall to mount the wall cap. Drill a small hole through the wall, to the outside of the house.

    • 4

Locate the hole on the outside of the house, using a ladder to access it, if necessary. Drill a 4 1/4-inch hole near where you drilled the hole from inside the house. Center the hole on a single piece of the exterior siding. Trying to mount the wall cap across seams in the siding is difficult, and can cause leaks. Drill the hole with a hole saw, using steady pressure and holding the saw perpendicular to the wall surface.

    • 5

Run a 1/2-inch bead of caulk around the perimeter of the hole. Slide the wall cap into the hole, and press the wall cap firmly into the caulk. Secure the wall cap by driving the included screws into the four holes on the corners of the wall cap with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Slide the end of the duct over the wall cap, inside of the house. Wrap a 12-inch strip of tape around the duct and wall cap to secure the duct in place.
