How to Install Double Draft Stops

A draft stop is typically a long tube that’s filled with foam or another type of insulating material. It’s installed at the bottom of an interior or exterior door and forms a seal to block air from leaking in. Besides keeping drafts out and making your home warmer, a draft stop helps reduce heating bills. A double draft stop works even better because it’s designed to seal both sides of the door, not just one.

Remove the four foam tubes and the two plastic connectors from the package. Insert one end of a tube halfway into a connector. Insert an end of the second tube halfway into the connector to make one long tube. Repeat the process with the remaining foam tubes and connector to assemble the double draft stop.

Place the foam tubes against the bottom of the door to determine the needed length. Place one end of a tube at the back edge of the door. They must be approximately 1 inch shorter than the inside width of the door. Trim the tubes with scissors, if needed.

Remove the stretchy cover from the package. Spread it out so the opening faces upward. Disconnect one foam tube from each of the plastic connectors. Insert the end opposite the connector into the cover and push it in; hold onto the connector. Insert the other tube into the cover, then reconnect the tubes. Repeat this process with the other tubes and connector.

Open the door on which you’re going to install the double draft stop. Slide the middle of the stop underneath the door so the elastic straps face upwards, and there’s a foam tube on each side of the door. Push the draft stop so the far end extends just past the door, then pull the stop back from the hinged side so the elastic strap grabs the door. Raise both straps up so they’re snug around the door.
