How to Kill Household Mold

Once you have positively identified the presence of mold in your home, you will need to determine if it is only on the surface or if it is inside walls or other areas you will need specialized skills to access. You can purchase test kits and schedule professional mold removal if necessary. If you determine that the mold is only on the surface you can remove it yourself. If you try to wipe the mold when it is dry, you take the risk of spreading the spores. You will need to lightly spray water on the mold to make it damp which will keep it in place when you clean it away.

Use your bucket to mix a solution of 1 part detergent, 5 parts bleach and 20 parts warm water. If you the material that you are cleaning can withstand a stronger bleach solution, you can go up to 10 parts bleach of the same solution. Use a scrub brush with bristles and wash down the pre-dampened surface.

Make sure there is very good circulation for the surface to dry quickly and completely.
