How to Get Leaves Out of an Inground Pool

Hot sultry days and a cool swimming pool go hand in hand in many backyards. In ground pools are a wonderful addition to your home's attractiveness. However, it does require some work as It is an artificial body of water and needs constant maintenance to keep it attractive. If there are any trees in the neighborhood, the leaves will find a way to blow into your water and you will need to know how to get them out.

      Get the water moving through your filter by turning it on and letting it run during the whole time you are cleaning. It will help filter out all the little bits and pieces that you might miss. Watch the filter strainer to make sure that it does not get clogged and from time to time, turn off the filter motor to empty the strainer.

      Use the pool pole skimmer to skim up the leaves that are floating on the surface. If you scoop the water towards the filter strainer as you work, the leaves will be more likely to be caught. Keep emptying the net into a trash can or on the grass as you work.

      Step into the pool and use the pool vacuum to sweep the bottom of the pool for any leaves and debris that have fallen. It will take some time as you will not be able to work very quickly and some of the leaves will start floating around again. Relax and take your time and you will soon have the water sparkling clean again.

      Install a leaf net if the pool is under trees that will be dropping a lot of leaves. It should catch the majority of them and whatever finds its way in will easily be removed with the pool skimmer or the pool filter. Just remove the net before swimming and replace it when you are done, until the leaves are no longer falling.

      Backwash your pool filter if you had a heavy concentration of leaves fall into the pool. The extra debris will clog up the sand and will need to be flushed out when you are done with all the leaf removal. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your pool filter.
