How to Determine Windstorm Damage to a Roof

Windstorms can be very damaging to roofs. But because the roof is not always looked at on a regular basis, windstorm damage can sometimes go unnoticed. You can prevent this by inspecting your roof for any damages after a storm to see if repairs are needed.

Wait until the storm is completely over before assessing any damage. Place a sturdy ladder against the side of the house leading to the roof. Make sure it doesn't wiggle or lean to one side. Wear old clothes and work gloves. A hat can also be useful to protect your head from any debris.

Inspect the top of the roof. Windstorm damage will often lift off tiles or move things like satellite dishes out of place. Don't move anything back into place just yet. Try to lift a few tiles to see if they are loose. Look closely at the tiles to see if there are any hail dents. Note any fallen tree branches or other objects.

Take pictures of all the damage with your camera. Be sure to get shots from several different angles. You'll need to show the insurance company these photos. Leave everything in place until you have taken the pictures.

Go into your attic to see if there is any internal damage from the windstorm. The insulation may be stripped away, or a section of the roof may have fallen in. Check for wet spots and leaks near the roof. Take pictures of any damage. You may need a flashlight to spot the damage.

Walk around your house to check for damage. Trees and tree limbs often fall on roofs or against the side of the house during windstorms. Make sure the rain gutters are in place, and take pictures of any damage that has occurred.
