How to Drill Out a Broken Screw in a Storm Door Frame

Broken screws are typically created by using a screwdriver or a drill bit that is the wrong size for the screw head. Removing one can be more than annoying—it can seem quite impossible without tearing into the surrounding material. Can you remove a broken screw from a storm door frame, for example, without damaging the frame itself? The answer is yes. What you will most likely need is a screw extractor.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Center punch
  • Screw extractor
  • Titanium-coated drill bits
  • Hammer
  • T-shaped twisting tool

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the center of the broken screw head (or whatever is left of it) with a pencil (a cross-mark may be the most useful). Place the tip of the center punch onto the pencil mark, then tap it forcefully with the hammer. This will center punch the broken screw, creating a depression in which the drill bit can later securely rest while also serving as a good way to center your drill hole. Make sure your center punch is made for metal.

    • 2

Drill a 1/16-inch hole into the center of the broken screw. Use a 1/16-inch titanium-coated drill bit to accomplish this.

    • 3

Increase the diameter of the hole. To do this, use the drill bit with the next-largest diameter, then repeat this with larger bits, if necessary, until the hole is the same size as that recommended for the screw extractor (see instructions that come with your screw extractor for this information). Make sure the screw extractor is about two-thirds the diameter of the broken screw in your storm door frame.

    • 4

Secure the screw extractor in place in the broken screw by inserting the screw extractor's tip into the hole then gently tapping it with the hammer.

    • 5

Twist the screw extractor firmly into the hole counterclockwise using the T-shaped twisting tool that should have come with the extractor. After a few moments, you will notice the broken screw begin to turn. Continue twisting and the broken screw will emerge from the storm door frame.
