How to Spot Hail Damage

Hail is never beneficial to your home's surface. It's dreaded, as it can easily damage cars and homes. On a house, hail tends to be the most damaging to the siding and the roof. If your home becomes extensively damaged in a hail storm, whether it's the roof or another part of the house, it's best to spot hail damage yourself so that you can contact your insurance company to make a claim. By spotting the hail damage, you'll be better able to challenge an insurance company if it balks at paying some of your claim. Take photographs of all instances or possible instances of hail damage.

Examine the siding on your house. There is most likely to be damage from hail on an older house. Look for cracks that are near to the bottom. The eave of the house tends to prevent damage from hail toward the top. There may even be holes in the siding.

Look for dents on the roof. If there are dents on the roof, that is likely hail damage. Examine the edges of the flaps of the shingles for cracks. They are easily weakened by hail.

Inspect the roof for dark areas that looks like bruises. To spot the hail damage, look at the areas that look bruised and see if the shingles have been knocked off.
