How to Remove Storm Debris

Although removing storm debris from your property is never a homeowner's idea of fun, at least you can take comfort that the worst of the storm has passed. A severe thunderstorm, tropical storm or hurricane can bring down older trees, electrical power lines and wildly toss about any unsecured items. Don't be discouraged with the massive mess of refuse, leaf litter and broken branches in your yard because the neighbors are dealing with similar issues. Set a good example by properly removing unsightly storm debris from your property.

Gather all leaves, branches and other plant-based debris for collection. Place lawn waste away from vehicles and utilities by the roadside. Use sturdy protective gloves when handling debris.

    • 2

Bag leaves, following any local regulations, for removal by your local leaf and lawn collectors. Separate contained debris and loose branches for easy sorting for your collectors.

    • 3

Hire a licensed professional to remove fallen trees and other large storm debris. If an unlicensed freelancer is injured on your property, you may legally be at fault.

    • 4

Remove any garbage blown onto your property. Sort trash, recyclables and other found materials for collection.

Call city services if debris is close to a downed power line for removal. Do not risk electrocution to clean the lawn.
