How to Protect an LP Tank from Hail

While liquified petroleum (LP) tanks allow for the easy transport and storage of propane gas, the valves and other fittings on such tanks can be damaged by hail. In addition to protecting the LP tank from damage from the elements, a case or cover can preserve the physical appearance of the tank by preventing paint chipping and rusting. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of different LP tank covers and cases suitable for every price range.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the size of the LP tank in order to choose the correct cover. While soft covers may be stretched to accommodate larger LP tanks, padded covers and hard cases must be sized exactly. LP tanks are sized according to their capacity, usually measured in gallons.

Choose the type of cover or case to install on your LP tank. Soft covers are the least expensive, but are typically made of nylon and offer only limited protection from the elements, including hail. While padded nylon covers offer more protection than thin soft covers, the best choice for protection against hail is a hard plastic case.

Install the case over the tank according to the directions provided by the manufacturer. Soft covers typically have zippers and simply slip over the LP tank, while hard cases are installed permanently over the LP tank.
