How to Install Snow Fencing

Installing this seasonal fence can aid in keeping roads clear of drifting snow. Snowdrifts tend to occur from high winds blowing snow across flat plains areas. The snow will accumulate beyond or downwind of any obstacle in its path. By erecting a snow fence upwind of an area such as a road, snowdrifts can be kept to a minimum and the road can remain passable. With the aid of another person you can erect a snow fence in a short amount of time by following a basic process.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll out the fencing in the area that the fence is going to be erected. Generally, the fence should be placed 50 to 60 feet from the road or pathway on the prevailing wind side. In other words, if the prevailing winter wind comes from the north, the fence should be placed on the north side of the road or pathway.

    • 2

Use the hammer and drive the metal posts every 8 to 10 feet on center beginning at the start of the fence. In heavier snowfall areas you may want to secure the fence with a closer spacing of the posts.

    • 3

Lift the end of the fence to the metal post and with the help of another person to support the fence, tie the fence to the post with a piece of the tie wire. You should only wire the top of the fence at this time. There are two structure wires that hold the wooden slats in place. The tie wire should be wrapped around the top structure wire and the metal post.

    • 4

Move down to the next post and again tie only the top of the fence to the top of the metal support post.

    • 5

Reaching the end of the fencing run, you can now go back and tie the lower structure wire to the metal posts. The vertical wooden slats will settle on the ground during the installation.
