How to Remove Snow From a Flat Roof

Flat roofs can cave in under the pressure of built-up snow. Slanted roofs typically are less of a concern because the snow falls off and the pressure is not much of a worry. Cleaning snow off a roof can protect the material and home from damage caused by the weight of the snow. Generally, the amount of weight varies before damage occurs. It is important to remove snow after a heavy storm to keep the damage to a minimum.

  Dress in winter clothing. Put on warm gloves, a snow jacket and slip-resistant snow boots.

  Remove a patch of snow up against the house and shovel to the side. Place the ladder in the clear patch. Shake the ladder to make sure it is sturdy and level. Check the ladder steps for ice. From now on, you need a friend's help.

  Shovel the snow from the flat roof. Throw over the side, away from the other person as well as the ladder. Leave roughly ¼ inch of snow to sweep off. If the snow shovel hits the roofing material, damage could cause leaks or chips in the roof.

  Sweep the remaining snow with the push broom. Walk slowly as you sweep. Ice under the remaining snow could cause slippage.

  Sprinkle rock salt evenly on the flat roof. Rock salt melts and protects from extra accumulation of more ice and snow.
