Trex Deck Snow Removal

Removing snow from a deck made out of Trex is a slightly different process than removing snow from a wooden deck. Trex is a composite of wood and plastic that resists moisture, which prevents rotting and splintering. When removing snow, extra care should be taken to not chip the deck surface. Snow removal is easier if the deck was built with Trex fasteners because there is an absence of emerging fasteners on the surface, which could otherwise slow your shoveling.
  1. Use Non-Metallic Shovel

    • Shovel snow with a non-metalic shovel. Sharp shovels that might chip or mar the surface should not be used. Shovel in the direction of the length of the decking material.

Go with Flow of Deck Boards

    • Starting on one side of the deck, shovel a strip of snow, tossing the snow off the edge of the deck. Repeat this, continuing across the length of the deck until snow is removed.

    Use Salt for Ice

    • Use calcium chloride or rock salt, available in many home centers, to melt stubborn ice patches on Trex decking. Rinse off when first practical.
