How to Add Oil to an Old Ariens Snow Thrower

For clearing large amounts of snow quickly, it's hard to beat the utility of a well-built snow thrower. Ariens has earned a reputation for producing solid, reliable snow throwers that last for decades. From time to time, every snow thrower needs fresh oil added to the crankcase. If you own an Ariens, it's an easy task, even if it's an older model.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cap to the oil fill tube. On a 1987 Ariens model ST824, it will be a black metal tube pointing upward and will be located on the right side of the engine. The dipstick will be attached to the underside of the cap. If you cannot locate the cap or the oil fill tube, Ariens recommends you contact the engine manufacturer directly. This is because over the years, engines manufactured by various companies were installed on their snow throwers.

Note the oil level on the dipstick. Insert the funnel into the oil fill tube and begin adding motor oil.

    • 3

Stop periodically, remove the funnel and re-insert the dipstick. Check the engine oil level. You are trying to fill the crankcase to the "full" line on the dipstick. Too much oil is just as bad for the engine as too little.

    • 4

Continue alternately adding oil and checking the level in the crankcase. Wipe the dipstick clean after each check. When the engine oil level reaches the "full" line on the dipstick, you have added enough.

    • 5

Remove the funnel from the oil fill tube, and twist the oil filler cap back in place.
